005_Russian icon – The Mother of God of the Burning Bush

 

 

This complicated iconography is based on Moses vision told in Exodus chapter 3. The Mother of God is depicted holding the Infant Jesus, placed in a star with 4 blue and 4 red points.
In the red points we see the symbols of the gospel writers,in the blue point angels holding symbols from the Akathistos Hymn. In the eight rose leaves surrounding Virgin,we see eight angels holding other symbols from the Akathistos Hymn.In the corners of the icon we see four old testament visions that are interpreted as speaking about the Holy Mother of God.
A very finely painted icon from an Old Believers workshop, first half of the 19th century, possibly Palech. 31 x 27 cm
