Russian Palech icon depicting the Introduction of Jesus in the Temple. This icon is painted in two registers.
The upper register shows the usual iconography of the Introduction of Jesus in the temple of Jerusalem. Joseph and Mary are presenting the baby Jesus to Simeon who has been waiting to hold the Messiah in his arms his whole life. Hannah is standing behind him and tbe whole scene is placed in a Temple complex that looks like an Asian palace. The velum ( cloth) symbolishes that the Introduction of Jesus in the Temple happens indoors.
In the lower register we see a very unusual scene based on the Magnificat. The mighty are falling from their trones in the underworld, the downtrodden and poor are elevated. Prophets are watching the scene with approval.
This very detailed and delicate icon is painted in the Old Believers village of Palech, circa 1800.
