MG 5356: BYZANTINE BRONZE ENCOLPION CROSS

This byzantine cast bronze cross or enkolpion was made to house a relic that could protect the owner of the cross. On the front we see an image of Christ as the High Priest wearing a columbium; on the reverse a standing Virgin in Orante gestus. 12-14th century. Byzantine Empire. 9,5×5,5 cm.
